Today we learned about cause and effect. Cause and effect means we did something and because of that something happened. So, what are some cause and effect that you have? -written by Ruth Lee
The BFG is a book character whom we have grown to love. He jabbels about crocodowndillies and bellypoppers and he loves to drink froscottle which gives him whizzpoppers. If you don't understand what you are reading now, it's okay. It just means you'll have to read the book The BFG. :) He also has a whoppsy big collection of phizzwards and trugglehumpers, and we have decided to create our own dream jars. Some dream jars have made up dreams written on the labels and some have dreams that we really had. There are so many topics we can write about and this was really fun writing about!
Keep a dream journal to write down interesting dreams you have. Put a notebook next to your bed and make notes of dreams when you wake up. What are some interesting dreams you have had recently?
In celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday, we dedicated today to reading. We dressed up as our favorite book characters or came to school in our pajamas as if ready to read our bedtime stories. We held a special assembly where we got to watch special performances by high school students, learn more about Dr. Seuss, find out our teachers' favorite authors, and also simply read. Later in the day, fifth graders also visited us to read to us. For our door decorations, we put together some fun and wacky characters from books written by Roald Dahl. We absolutely love reading because...
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go!" -- Dr. Seuss.
What would you like to do for our next Reading Day?
Read aloud time is one of our favorite time of the day. This month, we had the special privilege of listening to stories read by many special guests. Whenever we had a guest walk in our door, we were filled with excitement and anticipation of hearing a new story. Thank you so much for visiting and reading to us!!!
Here are some activities you might see in our Language Arts lessons:
Shared Reading -- Mrs. Kim and the class read the same book together. We read stories from our Storytown textbook starting with "Arthur's Reading Race" by Marc Brown. We laugh, learn new vocabulary, and practice comprehension strategies.
Modeled Reading -- Mrs. Kim reads aloud to us. She shows us how to read with expression and usually chooses books that are a little harder than we can read alone.
Guided Reading -- We work in small groups to read books that are right at our level. We practice decoding and comprehension skills.
Independent Reading -- We have D.E.A.R (drop everything and read) time every day. We can choose our own book and read for enjoyment.
Literature Study -- We take an in-depth look at one book, series, or author.
Word Study -- We spend time learning new words and spelling patterns.
Shared Writing -- The whole class writes together. We learn about each genre and practice new writing techniques.
Guided Writing -- We have mini-lessons on different writing strategies to improve our work.
Independent Writing - We write by ourselves, then we conference, edit, and publish our work.
